Sept. 9, 2011 - PRLog -- Marble tiles are widely used today for many applications and for many places within the home; they are popular countertop tiles, wall tiles and bathroom tiles. They are used as floor tiles but a certain finish and type should be used in order to be suitable for busy areas such as the kitchen.

Marble is a more expensive tile but there is no mistaking that marble tiles are beautiful and will add both elegance and design style to the home. Marble tiles come in many different colours and shades with white marble being incredibly popular for bathroom interiors. Marble tiles are a natural stone and have the characteristic vein like threads running through the tile and for this reason, no two marble tiles will look exactly alike but home owners feel this only adds to the design and style of marble tiles.

Marble tile history goes back to ancient times and one of the first countries to probably use marble tiles and marble flooring was Rome, religious buildings, grand homes and buildings of importance used marble to tile floors and ceilings. Marble flooring back then was a sign of wealth and many affluent homes and buildings used marble for their decoration.
Marble was also used for fine art and used to create sculptures and works of art, it was considered a precious material and it had many uses including as a building material.  Marble flooring and marble tiles were not just viewed and considered a decoration but more a work of art and of course marble holds onto and continues its reputation for being a luxurious tile that will add both elegance and style.

Marble is actually related to limestone and is a metamorphic rock which develops over millions of years within the earth.  The heat and pressure with which the stone is subjected to is huge and the marble, stones and minerals become crystallised. The vein like appearances on marble tiles occurs during the development process and is largely due to the different minerals present, this is the reason that marble differs and no two stones or tiles are the same.

Marble tiles can be used as floor tiles and are done so successfully, they create a real design statement in homes and marble flooring works well in the summer months by creating a cool comfortable floor solution.

Marble tiles are not the cheapest floor tile option and if you are tiling a particularly large area, it may stretch the budget but there are different ways in which you can use marble tiles to keep costs down. Marble can be used as much or as little as you like and it works well combined with other tile materials. Marble mosaic tiles can be used as borders and edging tiles for floors and walls and marble can be used in small areas of the kitchen or bathroom which will also keep costs down.

The bathroom area is one room where marble tiles work really well, either on backsplash areas or around bath tubs.

Marble tile is quite a dense strong tile but it can be prone to scratching and it does need regular maintenance. There are special cleaners on the market that will keep your marble tiles looking good and regular cleaning will ensure you marble tiles stay in good condition. Marble flooring and marble wall tiles can work very well in all homes and as long as they are installed correctly and looked after, marble tiles will add elegance and style as well as lasting the test of time.
