Desmond Howard's Famous 1991 'Heisman Pose' Photo Now Has Own Website

Few photographs have earned their own website. One 1991 photograph has done just that. The photograph is a 1991 image © Brian Masck, of Desmond Howard striking the iconic "Heisman Pose" with a performance that later earned Howard just that trophy.

Sept. 8, 2011 - PRLog -- It was the combination of an extremely gifted athlete and a veteran photographer who, together, created and preserved one of the most iconic images in college sports history.

Nearly twenty years later, the athlete heralded as the originator of “The Heisman Pose" has now completed an outstanding NFL career and is entertaining us on ESPN. And the image that froze the moment in time and made it real for millions now has its own website - http://www.TheTrophyPose.com

Soon after it happened, the moment was called "legendary," "famous," "most remembered," "electrifying" and "the cherry on top" of Desmond Howard's college career. The moment was on TV, but best captured by one still image.

The image captured by freelance photographer Brian Masck was first published in a December 1991 edition of Sports Illustrated. It recently was called, "one of the most famous photos in football history" by John U. Bacon of Michigan Radio. "Masck's photo was the image that has become iconic of the moment itself."

In 2005, the image was chosen by EA Sports for the Cover Image, the identity of the NCAA Football '06 video game.  And just last month, in August 2011 — nearly 20 years after the photo was taken and published in Sports Illustrated — it was chosen for a two-page automobile advertising spread with the picture displayed in full-page size. With Howard's image larger than the vehicle, it was meant to draw attention to a moment and an image that's larger than life.

Adding to the appeal and staying power of the image is the message behind the moment and the inspiration of an athlete extraordinaire.  The photo — a single image — has become the sole and complete inspiration for its own website — www.TheTrophyPose.com.  This brand new website has been built primarily to preserve the moment through top quality prints. But more is planned for the site as a tribute to Desmond Howard, who, rather than showboating the moment, offered a foretelling glimpse of his own future Heisman Trophy win.

The understated nature of the quick flex of "Heisman hommage" demonstrated that sports celebration is most powerful when done with absolute control and forethought. Desmond Howard could have done any number of things at that moment. You've seen them all. Jumping into the crowd for acceptance, being hoisted by teammates as a conquering hero or doing an end zone dance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXdYdCI2wss

But it was his self-aware control of the moment that created its staying power. It's why that singular image is so remembered and valued nearly twenty years after it transpired.

Two people and one moment has given Howard's generation a remarkable moment to treasure, savor, and re-create, and a younger generation something to aspire to. It was an extraordinary athlete in measured, elegant celebration frozen in time by the photographer — two people who had no connection — who have created an historic college football memory in that split second.

Howard went on to capture 85% of the first place votes to win the Heisman Trophy — the largest margin in the history of the Heisman Trophy at that time.

Nearly twenty years later, Desmond Howard is to be honored at halftime of the big game under the lights at Michigan Stadium on September 10, 2011 by The University of Michigan and The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame. Fans will see a man who has achieved success long after his graduation from The University of Michigan. The longevity of the moment speaks to the power of its understatement, it's confidence. It's proof of accomplishment gained by hard work and determination.

Most will recall that brief moment, frozen in time on film, as they honor Desmond Howard. I wonder how many will attempt their version of "The Trophy Pose" as a way to show their respect for such a well-deserving role model?
