Rising demand for Sports Injury Diagnostic Scans Prompted Opening Of A New MSK service in Leeds

An extended diagnostic ultrasound service was formally launched at this is my: health screening and ultrasound centre by Leeds Carnegie professional rugby player Phil Nilsen.

Sept. 7, 2011 - PRLog -- The Centre continues to strive for excellence and decided to extend the range of services for diagnostic ultrasound imaging, as it noticed more requests for sports injuries and related muscular problems from many people wanting faster appointment times than currently being offered by NHS.

After appointing experts in the musculoskeletal field it was decided to officially introduce this additional service with the added benefit of in-house physiotherapy services should the patient require a one stop service.

The Centre’s Managing Director, Judith Pilling (a clinical specialist) will work alongside a team of experts in a wide range of healthcare service offerings. The new musculoskeletal team includes Sarah Townsend, clinical practitioner and MSK specialist, Emma White, a physiotherapist, and James Simpson, an interventional radiologist. With the service already seeing its first patients, Phil was delighted to be asked to officially open this extended MSK and sports injury clinic, having had first hand experience of the Centre’s ultrasound scanning facilities due to the pending arrival of a new addition to the family.

As Phil noted, “With NHS waiting lists increasing, sports people want a fast diagnosis to their problem. This direct access facility will allow them to get to the root of the problem quickly so that treatment to recovery time is speeded up.  Many professional and social sports people and other active sports enthusiasts with injuries would simply not want to wait so long for an NHS appointment.  A private provider, who you know you can trust, is the best answer.  I am delighted with the care my wife and I have already received at this fantastic Centre in relation to the forthcoming birth of our baby. They have always been completely professional in everything they do, and I’ m confident this additional service will be a complete success and I am happy to recommend them.”

Musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound is on the increase due to the high demand and the simplicity of being able to image superficial structures including muscles, ligaments and tendons. The effectiveness of ultrasound in the MSK field has risen significantly over the last decade mainly due to developments in ultrasound technology with the introduction of high-frequency, high-resolution imaging and its non-invasive nature.   Ultrasound is the perfect cost effective solution to the diagnosis of most musculoskeletal problems.

The Centre also prides itself on the follow-up care in all aspects of its healthcare offering, and MSK is no exception. Post ultrasound diagnosis, treatment can be offered by the in house physiotherapist, Emma White. With a background in sports injury and experience of a wide range of treatment options, most MSK related conditions can be treated cost effectively and just as importantly, quickly.

Emma herself says “When a client has undergone an ultrasound scan it allows me to focus on the actual area causing the discomfort or pain, with clarity and certainty of knowing what the problem is. The area can be effectively manipulated to alleviate the pain and rehabilitate it. We can then work on a treatment and exercise regime and provide a continued, comprehensive at home exercise programme.  The client will hopefully recover movement in a shorter period of time. Practitioners are no longer working blind - with the help of ultrasound the whole process from diagnosis to recovery can be speeded up, and in most cases the client gets back to work or playing the sport they enjoy so much, quicker”.

People seeking help for a problem area will usually have had an initial consultation and examination with their GP. A patient can be referred by their GP but self-referral can be quicker. On arrival at the Centre the specialist will perform an examination of the specified problem area and with the addition of an ultrasound scan a faster diagnosis in most cases is given. Reasons for imaging vary from a simple pain or ache, swelling from an accident / illness and for the sports enthusiast a recent or on-going injury. The most common ailments diagnosed are:  Impingement and instability in the upper back or shoulder, tendon tears particularly in the Achilles tendon or shoulder rotator cuff, injury in the knee region and cartilage injuries.
