Sept. 7, 2011 - PRLog -- Oakbio Inc. today announced that F. Robert Tabita, Ohio Eminent Scholar and Professor of Microbiology, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio has joined the Oakbio Advisory Board. Professor Tabita brings 30 years of experience studying how microorganisms capture and assimilate carbon dioxide (CO2).

Bacterial capture of CO2 from industrial gas is a critical first step in Oakbio’s process to capture greenhouse gas and convert CO2 into chemical value. Professor Tabita has studied the key enzyme in CO2 uptake by bacteria, called RubisCO, exploring regulation of its amount and activity, plus, how changes in RubisCO structure can increase CO2 binding and uptake into cell components.

“The RubisCO enzyme is key to carbon capture and chemical yield when we grow bacteria in industrial gases”, said Brian Sefton, Oakbio’s President. “Professor Tabita has tremendous expertise that will assist Oakbio’s efforts to optimize RubisCO and bacterial CO2 uptake generally”.

“I am pleased to employ the expertise and experience of my laboratory to enter into a synergistic relationship with Oakbio to explore ways to employ bacteria to convert carbon dioxide to useful products” said Professor Tabita.

“Going forward, Oakbio will work closely with world experts in the diverse technology and business areas in which we operate”, added Russell Howard, Oakbio’s CEO. “Bacteria with extraordinary ability to uptake CO2 will maximize CO2 capture for our industrial partners and contribute to the cost-competitiveness of Oakbio's chemical production.” Howard, who created and spun out industrial chemicals and bio-fuels company Codexis from Maxygen, both NASDAQ listed, is a pioneer in development of non-petroleum, non-foodstock derived chemicals and fuels using microbial technologies.
