By: Colette Robicheau The ABCs of Fraud is a free educational program presented to seniors and other at-risk groups that interactively teaches valuable scam prevention and fraud awareness techniques. Fraud is no longer just a worry of the elderly – it affects everyone. And contrary to popular belief, fraud and identity theft don’t just happen online. 41% of identity theft and fraud occurs off-line, and it costs on average $800 and takes 65 hours to reclaim a stolen identity. On Saturday, October 8 in the Atlantic Superstore parking lot on Barrington Street’s from 10:00am to 1:00pm, ShredGuard will be securely shredding sensitive documents for a donation to help fund the program. Help foil identity theft by shredding all documents that contain “tombstone” The ABCs of Fraud program is run by volunteers and is presented free of charge to interested groups. Since the Rotary Club of Halifax started this program, the Halifax Regional Police have reported an increase in unsuccessful scam attempts – a success they have partially attributed to the ABCs of Fraud program. Volunteers will be accepting all paper and documents for shredding. They encourage a donation for the service.
