Sept. 7, 2011 - PRLog -- Toughness tests are an essential and integral part of any industrial establishment. It is obvious that industrial unit is made up of complex structures and parts and in order to run smoothly and safely, it is required that the strength and integrity of the various parts and structures are maintained at the desired levels. Failing which any accident or breakdown can happen, which can result in the loss of life or capital. Production may also be halted as a result of a sudden fault due to structural issues. There are various procedures to collect this toughness data for the materials and it depends on the type of the material to be tested and the type of strength-check required.

Charpy impact testing is used by engineers when there is no way to check the previous data related to the strength of the material.  It is based on Charpy impact energy and fracture toughness principles.  Based on the position and function of any structure it is very important to test the ductility of the matter. It is required because ductility determines how much stress a part can sustain.  In such cases bend testing is used. It is measured against varying radius and resultant cracks formed on the surface. Different sets of data are collected to finally collect the most reliable information about the strength of the material. Bend testing is done mostly for the metallic equipments.

Sometime because of either the access issues or a very different type of check required non-destructive testing is practiced. It is pretty reliable and it enables us to assess the durability and the product life cycle. In the most sensitive plants and sophisticated structures it is highly recommended to use non-destructive strength determination tests. It is commonly used in advanced automobile production plants. Though there are various such methodologies that are practiced to assess the strength of the materials but it largely depends on the unit and the structure as to which procedure should be adopted.

To fix the flaws found as a result of various strength checks, certified welding inspectors try to weld the part which is seemingly found to be the weaker link.  When a plant is functioning wear and tear is quite normal and so are the different testing methodologies adopted by the engineers to ensure smooth operations. Some of these procedures are called hardness testing, industrial radiography, leak testing, Magnaflux and magnetic particle testing.Browse through http://www.abcndt.com for more information.
