The Dangers Of Distracted Driving

Sept. 6, 2011 - PRLog -- Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of automobile accidents in the United States. Teens and younger drivers are particularly at risk. Here are a few tips to help you avoid putting yourself and your passengers at risk.

One of the biggest problems we have today is people using a cell phone while driving. Many people still talk on their cell phones even though it is illegal to talk on a handheld while driving. The safest thing to do is to never use a handheld while you are driving.
If you are driving and the phone rings the best thing to do would be to let it go to voice mail. If you want to avoid all distractions it’s best to turn your ringer off before you step inside your auto.

Many of us don’t think twice when changing the radio stations and changing the songs on the cd player when driving. However, that can be distracting too because you may not be able to react in time in case of an emergency. It’s best to avoid fiddling with the stereo as much as possible when driving. Kids can be a huge distraction. It’s best to give them some books or toys to keep them busy and make sure they are buckled up. Other passengers can also be a distraction if you are paying them a lot of attention or engrossed in conversation.

Even sights and on the roads can be distracting such as accidents on the road or a car that was just pulled over by the cops. Not only that but stopping to stare can also worsen traffic and congestion. It’s best to just mind your own business and drive by. Putting makeup on and grooming is also extremely dangerous. It’s best to do take care of these matters before you leave the house. Grooming is fine if you are in a parked car in a parking lot somewhere but never when operating a vehicle.

Distracted driving is an issue for everyone; old and young. However, teens are most severely affected; distracted driving is the number one killer for teens. Teens are more likely to crash due to immaturity, over confidence and inexperience.
