Sept. 17: The Atrium to Host Annual Senior-Fit Health Fair

Sept. 6, 2011 - PRLog -- Senior-Fit, the annual health fair hosted by The Atrium at The Allendale Community for Mature Living in Allendale, is being held on Sat., Sept. 17 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Once again, local residents are invited to participate in this free, fun health event specially designed to address potential medical risks and undiagnosed medical conditions that may otherwise remain undetected in older adults.

"This annual event is always well-attended because we combine a festive environment that celebrates today's active seniors with access to local health resources, in one convenient location," said Mary Stampleman, ADC, Director of Therapeutic Recreation & Community Relations for The Atrium. Senior-Fit's theme this year is mind, body and spirit.

The health fair features a wide range of free wellness and health education sessions and information. Attendees will receive free gifts and an opportunity to win door prizes. Entertainment will be featured in the lobby while the following free break-out sessions are held in the The Atrium Cinema at the designated times:

   10:45 a.m. - "Zumba Gold Senior Chair Aerobics" will be led by Brooklynn Weight
   11:30 a.m. - Tai-Chi for Seniors will be taught by instructor Hasmig Mekjian

Planned free offerings include a cervical spine evaluation performed by Pinelli Chiropractic Center; a foot screening performed by Howard Kliman, D.P.M.; hand and foot massages courtesy of Jeannette Mendez; chair massage therapy and young living essential oils compliments of Jaime Bachrach, C.M.T. and Andrew Cicirelli, L.M.T., respectively; Shiatsu massage courtesy of Barbara Finlayson; aromatherapy provided by Vitas Hospice Care; mental aerobics "Games Seniors Play" by Debbie Shapiro; and blood pressure screenings with a nurse from The Allendale Community. Information regarding the senior living campus, which includes an assisted living residence and a skilled nursing/subacute care facility, as well as its Senior Social Club and Respite Programs will also be available.

"For seniors, massage therapy has proven physical benefits such as lowering blood pressure, relieving pain, improving overall circulation, and increasing mobility," said Jaime Bachrach, C.M.T., owner of Harmony Within Massage Therapy of Westwood, N.J. "Added to that, it is known to improve emotional well-being by releasing endorphins and promoting sleep. At Senior-Fit, our massage therapy sessions will be customized for each individual, taking his or her specific needs into consideration in order to gain the maximum benefits from the treatment."

Featured health and wellness exhibitors are the Alzheimer's Association; Bergen County Department of Health Services Information; Hackensack University Medical Center Platinum Plus; Valley Hospice and Valley Homecare; physical and occupational therapy information from The Allendale Community's Rehabilitation Center; Young Living Essential Oils; Mary Kay Cosmetics; ComForcare Senior Home Care Services; and CPR first aid information from Bob Ehlers, E.M.T.
