Dental implant expert focuses on best research available

Implant expert points to quickly advancing dental implant science
By: Steve Calabasas

Sept. 2, 2011 - PRLog -- An internationally savvy dental implant expert in the field of “osseointegrated dental implants” (a relatively recent dental discovery where a titanium `insert’ or `post’ bonds molecularly with the bone), is leading the charge for this remarkable procedure.

One issue is whether to `load’ the new tooth on the implanted `insert’ or `post’ immediately or after a period of time. That’s important to people with missing, broken or damaged teeth who previously had to undergo a long process with a less-than-optimal success rate. (65% before the new techniques compared with a success rate of about 98 percent today).

“But now, recent research shows there is a definite correlation between different research initiatives regarding the importance of osseointegrated dental implants,” said Dr. Greg Rubin, Head of the Calabasas Dental Institute, a well-known full-practice and dental research facility in Calabasas, California, about 20 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

“A study published March 2011 by the National Institute of Dental and Cranio Facial Research focused on the various merits of the dental implant process,” Dr. Rubin says. “These include using various procedures for the implants, including immediate placement vs. delayed placement; implant placement following gum work or sinus augmentation; and immediate vs. delayed prosthetic loading.”

Rubin says the study also looked at the role of systemic diseases in the success rate of osseointegrated implants, the quality of life and patient preferences for dental implants compared to other methods and the specific needs of children who have congenitally missing teeth or suffer from developmental disabilities.

Another finding reported implant failure rates to be higher in smokers than in non-smokers.  While there are reports of similar failure rates between people with well-controlled diabetes and those without diabetes, individuals with Type 2 diabetes may have a slightly higher failure rate.

According to the research, no studies have documented the success of implants in individuals who develop diabetes, osteoporosis or other illnesses after placement.  In general, the relationship between systemic health and implant success is not well documented.

According to Dr. Rubin, more research is needed to study the various techniques and procedures for implant placement.  Although this research study concluded it is possible to successfully load dental implants immediately after placement in certain patients, Dr. Rubin insists more randomized control studies are needed to understand the rate of success regarding immediate or delayed loading of implants.

At the forefront of practice and applied research, the Calabasas Dental Institute is creating new opportunities for everyone to benefit from the advances in dental implants and in general dentistry as practiced by Dr. Greg Rubin, Dental Implant Expert.
