Bartlett Electrician Offers Public Electrical Car Charging Station

Sept. 2, 2011 - PRLog -- BARTLETT, Tenn. – Above and Beyond Electric, one of the first green electrical service companies in Memphis, is taking its green initiative a step further with the installation of a plug-in charging station for electric vehicles.

The charging station, which was completed earlier this month, is located at the company’s headquarters, 7302 Memphis Arlington Road in Bartlett. It is available for use at no charge for anyone with an electric car as a public service.

The station is designed to charge a Chevy Volt in two to three hours and an all-electric Nissan LEAF in six to eight hours. The Leaf can drive about 100 miles before needing to be recharged, and the volt has a range of approximately 40 miles.

Nathan Harmeier, president of Above and Beyond Electric Company, said he believes the station will be used more for drivers to “top off” batteries than actual fully charging their vehicles. His main goal is to create public awareness and to encourage other business people to install charging stations, too.

“In Austin, Texas, there are more than 100 charging stations,” Harmeier said. “It’s my dream that Memphis will do the same. I would love to see them at restaurants, hotels, medical facilities, retail stores and colleges – anywhere people can drop off their car, run their errands or get something to eat or go to school while they are waiting.”

The first charging station in the city was installed at the Peabody Hotel earlier this month. Sixty-nine other stations are slated to be built throughout the city and surrounding suburbs in the near future. The project is funded by a $99.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.

“I am thrilled to continue to play a part in helping our city go green,” Harmeier said. “It gives me hope for our kids’ futures.”
