The Away Place - Poignant Story Now Available in Soft Cover

Truth on a Deathbed Inspires a Daughter to Right Her Mother’s Wrongs

Aug. 31, 2011 - PRLog -- The Away Place is the poignant story of a special bond between a man with Down Syndrome and an idealistic doctoral student.

John often imagines he is somewhere other than the state institution, in “The Away Place”, and play-acts things he sees on television that he has never experienced.

Sarah Richardson’s mother reveals a secret in a deathbed confession that spurs Sarah to become an activist for protecting the rights of developmentally disabled adults in the turbulent 1970s. She founds an experimental group home and five institutionalized adults move into her startup facility. She finds herself drawn to one especially sensitive and gentle man, John, who grew up in the institution never knowing his family.

When tragedy strikes one of the members of the group, it ultimately leads Sarah to discover secrets about her mother’s past. What happened to her mother that will bring Sarah’s past, present and future full circle?

“The Away Place made me laugh and made me cry, scared me and gave me such joy. Having experience working for a company that supported and trained developmentally disabled adults, this struck me as absolutely true to life and as a very compassionate, yet starkly realistic picture of these elements of our society who are often misunderstood and pushed to the fringes. This is a must read for everyone, young and old.”  -- Rhonda May, editor/web designer

Tiger writes with amazing clarity, shifting perspectives throughout her narration – the reader sees the experience through Sarah’s eyes and through John’s eyes. Tiger’s brilliant novel is rich with emotion, complex characters and a dramatic ending that will stay with you long after you’ve finished the book.
