Gov. Chris Christie Lashes Out Against Islamophobia and Defends Appointing a Muslim Judge

New Jersey Gov. Christie is no stranger to stating exactly what is on his mind. He took advantage of the opportunity at a press conference when he said, “I'm tired of dealing with the crazies,” in defense of his appointment of a Muslim American.

Aug. 31, 2011 - PRLog -- The Republican’s appointment of Muslim-American Sohail Mohammed to a state bench ruffled some feathers among some who fear the threat of Sharia Law, but when asked about those concerns, Gov. Christie made clear he had no patience for such “ignorance”.

“Sharia law has nothing to do with this at all,” the governor said. “It’s crazy.  The guy’s an American citizen who has been an admitted lawyer to practice in the state of New Jersey, swearing an oath to uphold the laws of New Jersey, the constitution of the state of New Jersey, and the Constitution of the United States of America and has never been accused of doing anything but honorably and zealously upholding the oath he took when he became a lawyer and it’s just unnecessary to be accusing this guy of things just because of his religious background.”

Christie is not known to be soft on terrorism. Definitely no terrorist sympathizer, he successfully prosecuted a group of Muslims who were conspiring to attack Fort Dix. But at the same time Christie has zero tolerance for racism and bigotry in any form.
Unfortunately there aren’t many other GOP leaders willing to take the stand that Chris Christie did. Gov. Christie’s stand is a sigh of relief in an age of Islamophobiapalooza, especially from a high profile GOP official. Sadly, Gov. Christie’s righteous stand for Sohail Mohammad is an exception in today’s politics.

After Christie shot back with his characteristic aggressiveness, many praised him for his commitment to end Islamophobia. MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell gave Gov. Christie a standing ovation for his impassioned defense of a Muslim judge. Later on Christie picked up an unlikely ally for a prominent Republican politician these days: the Council on American-Islamic Relation, better known as CAIR. The group's Garden State branch sent a shout-out to Christie after the above video made the rounds. CAIR-NJ Executive Director James Yee said in a statement. "Gov. Christie's praise highlights the commitment of American Muslims to building a better society, we hope the governor's comments will help stem the rising tide of Islamophobia in our society and help unify our nation."

Many activists believe Christie has done a better job than any state politician in our time. He is also one of the very few governors in our time who has proposed going after those problems directly -- by taking on the unions and addressing long-term liabilities, as well as cutting spending -- despite the political cost. That combination makes him simply the most important governor in the nation today.
