PRLog - Aug. 31, 2011 - Early this month, Time Magazine published a story about the rise of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in children across the nation.  The article cites a new medical report from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality highlighting that in 2009, skin infections resulted in 71,900 children hospital admissions.

The data illustrated that skin infection hospitalization rates have increased from 4.5 cases per 10,000 children in 2000 to 9.4 cases in 2009.  This remarkable increase now ranks skin infections as the 7th most common cause for children hospitalization.

Although MRSA infections have long been associated with healthcare settings, community-acquired MRSA appears to be rapidly increasing.  “"I don't think it's really well appreciated that in most communities, community-acquired MRSA has become the dominant cause of soft tissue infection requiring emergency department care and inpatient care," reported Dr. Patrick S. Romano, Professor of medicine and pediatrics at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine, in an interview with the New York Times.

Children are not the only ones impacted by MRSA in the community or in healthcare settings.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) one out of every twenty hospital patients acquires an infection while being treated for another illness and the infection is often MRSA.  Reducing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) has become a focus of the CDC in recent years.

New technologies, by UltraViolet Devices, Inc. (UVDI), are changing the infection control options for reducing HAIs.    “These drug-resistant microbial pathogens can be a real threat to human health and a financial burden to society,” reported Richard Hayes, President of UVDI.  “Fortunately there are proven cost effective technologies, such as UVDI’s V-360 Room Sanitizer that can be utilized in healthcare and community settings to destroy bacteria, fungi and viruses that would otherwise threaten human health.”
