Aug. 30, 2011 - PRLog -- Long Beach, CA – August 30, 2011 – Brookfield Homes and The Long Beach Housing Development Company (LBHDC), the nonprofit arm of the City of Long Beach, worked together to transform a blighted stretch of land along the Atlantic corridor and create quality, affordable homeownership opportunities in Long Beach.

You wouldn’t recognize the area from a year ago. The clean Spanish architecture of the Coronado townhomes brings life to a street that once had boarded up buildings replaced by a few commercial establishments, and then sat empty for the last 5 years after the land was acquired by the city.

According to Ellie Tolentino, City’s Manager of the Housing Services Bureau and Vice President of the LBHDC, Coronado not only changed the look of Atlantic Avenue but has created a sense of revitalization in the neighborhood.

“It is beautiful and has made a huge difference in the area,” Tolentino said, and later added, “We believe in assisting projects like (Coronado) for they act as catalyst for more investment in the community.”

Brookfield Homes earned the honor of being a part of this important redevelopment project through the company’s experience, financial strength – it’s the sixth largest residential platform by land and housing assets in North America - and by what they call a “holistic” approach to community development.

According to John O’Brien, Vice President of Urban Infill at Brookfield Homes Los Angeles, their efforts are centered on the desire to give back to communities. The affordable community at Coronado exemplifies the company’s commitment to a process that gives thoughtful consideration to each city’s history and culture, and invites stakeholders to be a part of the vision.

The LBHDC made buying a home in Coronado possible for moderate income families with a robust assistance program. This involved a second mortgage through the LBHDC that made up the difference between what each homebuyer qualified for, based on household income and family size, and the homes’ market value.

The impact the homes have had on the 48 buyers and their families demonstrates how important these types of redevelopment projects are for cities and their residents. Coronado homeowner, Linda Kelley, never thought she could own a home, let alone a brand new home in Long Beach.

For Kelley, and others who want to live in Long Beach, Coronado provided the opportunity to own a nice home she can live in for the rest of her life. And like she aptly put it, “We’re not leaving the city and taking our tax dollars with us.”

The Coronado homes consist of two to four bedroom townhomes and flats that elicit a “wow” response from everyone who’s visited the property. The well built community boasts dramatic arches, tall solid wood doors, and interiors that were made to feel luxurious.

Each home has a spacious, open floor plan and comes with granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, green features that save money on utilities, a security system with one year of free monitoring and an attached two-car garage that provides direct interior access to the home.

While the homes have all been spoken for, the Coronado sales team is still taking reservations for final opportunities and Brookfield Homes has more incredible communities in select locations in Southern California.
