N.C. State Archives Offers Guidelines for Protecting Special Documents in Hurricane Season

Aug. 25, 2011 - PRLog -- RALEIGH, N.C. – As the first hurricane threatens North Carolina this season, individuals and organizations may need to protect important papers and records.  The N.C. State Archives collects and preserves historical and documentary materials and offers guidelines to historical societies, government officials and individuals on ways to protect vital records in case of emergency:

•   Create or update your emergency contact list
•   Review your disaster response plan
•   Conduct a disaster drill
•   Survey your building for risks and try to mitigate them

For additional information on the protection of vital documents, other resources include the State Historical Records Advisory Board (SHRAB).  A grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission provided for disaster preparedness training across the state.  A Web site was created, which includes a disaster preparedness section, at http://www.history.ncdcr.gov/shrab/disaster.htm.  Families can visit http://www.archives.ncdcr.gov/news/mayday_family.html.
