Cambridge Healthtech Institute Course - Scaffolds: Bridging the Gap between 2D and 3D

3 hour course to be held in Boston on November 17 lead by David Kaplan, Ph.D., Tufts University; Melik Demirel, Ph.D., Pennsylvania University; Derek J. Hansford, Ph.D., Ohio State University; and Umut A. Gurkan, Ph.D., Harvard-MIT.

Aug. 25, 2011 - PRLog -- When: Thursday, November 17 (9:00 AM - 12:00 PM)
Where: Omni Parker House, Boston, MA

Three-dimensional (3D) in vitro models aim to bridge the gap between standard two-dimensional (2D) cell-based assays and the in vivo environment. Scaffolds provide the foundation for this dimensional shift. Well-designed scaffolds provide the necessary local structural, mechanical, and environmental cues to direct functional growth. Additionally, scaffolds help preserve the bioactivities of the biomolecules helping control biomolecule distribution and release. This interactive short course is designed to provide practical solutions for moving from 2D to 3D. Build your scaffold expertise!

Keynote Presentation: Silk Scaffolds
David Kaplan, Ph.D., Professor, Engineering, Tufts University

Polymeric Coatings for Tissue Engineering
Melik Demirel, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Engineering Science and Mechanics, Pennsylvania State University

Engineering the Cellular Microenvironment for Microtissue Development
Derek J. Hansford, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Biomedical Engineering, Ohio State University

A Scaffold-Free Multicellular Three-Dimensional in vitro Model of Osteogenesis
Umut A. Gurkan, Ph.D., Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Medicine, Harvard Medical School; Center for Biomedical Engineering, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard-MIT Health Sciences & Technology

This course will be held prior to the start of CHI’s sixth annual Predictive Functional Human Tissue Models conference that will take place on November 17-18, 2011.
