Aug. 24, 2011 - PRLog -- Carlsbad, Calif. – Pacific Ridge School, the Carlsbad non-profit, independent school which opened in 2007 and includes grades seven through 12, is pleased to announce that Director of College Counseling Bonnie Laughlin has received the Juel Lee Mentorship Award from the Western Association for College Admission Counseling (WACAC). Mr. Lee, whom the award is named after, was known and admired for his effective and memorable mentoring of young admissions professionals.  Although the award has been in existence for five years, Ms. Laughlin is only the second recipient of the award.

Currently the college counseling director at Pacific Ridge School, Ms. Laughlin has spent more than 25 years as a high school counselor in the San Diego area. Over the past four years, Ms. Laughlin built the college counseling program at Pacific Ridge. Prior to that, she spent eight years in college counseling at Torrey Pines High School. She developed, in cooperation with colleague Nancy Caine, a College Counseling certificate program at the University of San Diego with the ACT program, which was accepted by the University of California, San Diego, two years later. She also founded the first college counseling training program of its kind in the state of California with Ernest Valdez. Today, colleges across the country utilize similar programs.

In addition, Ms. Laughlin has mentored many college counselors through her active membership in WACAC, serving in roles ranging from social committee chair to president. In 1997, Ms. Laughlin was honored with the WACAC Service Award for her exceptional service to the community, responsiveness to the needs of students and families in the school-to-college transition, significant research in admissions, and sustained, long-term commitment to the principles of the profession.

Dr. Bob Ogle, co-head of Pacific Ridge School, remarked, “Pacific Ridge School congratulates Ms. Laughlin for her dedication to the profession and commitment to the success of all students in their future endeavors. The Juel Lee Mentorship Award is well deserved and we are so proud to have Ms. Laughlin on the Pacific Ridge School faculty. We look forward to another successful year as she guides our students into the next phase of their academic careers.”
