Northern Lights 2011/12 Most Spectacular for 50 Years?

The event, caused by the Solar Maximum, “will be the best, brightest and most dramatic opportunity to view the aurora in a long time” said Orvar Thorgiersson, an Icelandic photographer from Reyjavik.

Thorgiersson concluded: 'It will be like nothing you've ever seen before.'

The northern lights can typically be seen between the months of September and March above the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions, with Iceland, Sweden, Finland and Norway recognised as ideal locations giving the best chance of seeing this phenomenon.
