“Revolutionary War Encampment Living History Weekend” at the Smith-Appleby House Museum

Aug. 23, 2011 - PRLog -- SMITHFIELD, RI — Colonial Minutemen, militia, and British Red Coats do battle and host games, demonstrations, and more at a free “Revolutionary War Encampment Living History Weekend” at the Smith-Appleby House Museum in Smithfield, RI, on Saturday, Sept. 24, and Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011.

The event is free and open to the public.

Hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Activities include:
  * Military drills and full-scale battles with opposing forces
  * Civilian sutlers & vendors featuring crafts and ware
  * Living history demonstrations including cooking, firestarting, and making musket balls
  * Fashion show featuring the clothing of the Colonial and Revolutionary War era
  * Story telling featuring tales of the Revolutionary War from the perspective of a camp follower
  * Children's games, crafts, military drills, races, and other activities
  * Blacksmithing (Sunday only)
  * Worship services (Sunday only)

In addition, tours of the historic Smith-Appleby House Museum are available. Museum tour donations are $4 per adult and children are free.

The Smith-Appleby House was built, circa 1696, as a one-room stone-ender with a loft by Elisha Smith, a grandson of John Smith “The Miller" — one of Roger William’s original party of six men who left the Massachusetts Bay Colony to settle in Providence. Later generations of the family expanded the House to 12 rooms. Today, the House and grounds are a living Museum. Volunteers portraying Colonial-era characters conduct tours and demonstrations depicting life during the Revolutionary War. The historic House Museum features original furnishings, designs and exhibits — and hosts public events and activities year-round. Coming up: a Gingerbread Baking Day in October, a Colonial Dinner in

November, and Holiday Celebrations with Santa & Mrs. Claus in December.  

The house is headquarters to The Historical Society of Smithfield.
