New Learner Driver Initiative for Nottingham

A scheme designed to save parents of learner drivers hundreds of pounds on lessons & insurance, is coming to Nottingham in September. Learnerclub has been running in Grantham since 2009 & aims to cut the cost of learning to drive by up to 50%.

Aug. 23, 2011 - PRLog -- Learnerclub was launched in 2009 by driving instructor Robert Lukies, and was the first scheme of its kind in the country. The idea behind the scheme is that parents hire out dual controlled cars, like those used by driving instructors, and supervise their children’s driving practice themselves, which reduces the number of lessons needed with an instructor, and therefore the cost of learning.

It also means that they save money on insurance. The cost of insuring the family car for a young driver can be exorbitant. Hiring a dual controlled car from Learnerclub avoids this cost as the cars are already insured. All parents have to pay for is membership of the scheme, and a small car rental charge.

Once a parent and child have joined the scheme, they receive induction training. Parents must complete a two-hour course with a Learnerclub instructor before taking their children out in the car, to prove that they have knowledge of essential driving skills, and to learn how to operate the dual controlled car. Learners must complete an intial assessment by a Learnerclub instructor.

Robert explains how he came up with the idea of Learnerclub: “The majority of people who want to learn to drive use a qualified driving instructor and on average will need between 40-50 hours of tuition, as well as 15-20 hours of practice with a parent or friend. One hour of driving tuition can cost up to £25, and the cost of (...) insurance can be anything from £500-£1000. This makes the cost of learning to drive in excess of £1500 (...).

“A large proportion of driving lessons are spent practising car control skills (...) Much of this practice could be safely conducted by a parent or friend who has held a full licence for three years.”

Having been successful in Grantham, the scheme is now coming to Nottingham. The first of Learnerclub’s fleet of dual controlled cars will be available for hire from a supermarket in Gamston. More cars will be rolled out over the following weeks.
