Aug. 22, 2011 - PRLog -- When St Colman's College first year students begin their second-level studies at the Claremorris College this coming week they will be making history by being the first secondary school in Ireland to replace school books with iPads.

And for seven lucky first years they will be receiving a free iPad from Irish philanthropist, Darragh MacAnthony.

Mr MacAnthony, who is Chairman of Peterborough United Football Club in England, selected the seven students after all new students at St Colman's were invited to sumbit a short story which were judged by the Dublin-born entrepreneur.

Mr MacAnthony made his philanthropic gesture after reading in MayoToday.ie that the school was replacing school  books with iPads for first years. He was quoted to say: “The initiative supported by St Colman’s College is tremendous. I am thrilled for the students, parents and teachers who are part of this historic step forward and their courage deserves to be commended." He added: "Initiatives like this encourage a greener Ireland and ensure that we continue to be a worldwide leader in progressive education."
