Up to 70% of individuals presenting for alcohol detoxification have significant symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.
In WellStep Atlanta's outpatient program, patients initially undergo a medical evaluation that includes a history, physical and lab work.
If found appropriate to participate in outatient detox, patients are given instructions on when to totally stop drinking and are scheduled to return to the clinic, when they will receive medication to reduce withdrawal symptoms and to prevent complications of alcohol detoxification such as seizures and delirium tremens (DT’s). This medication typically includes either carbamazepine (Tegretol) or benzodiazepines such as chlordiazepoxide (Librium).
Patients must have a responsible adult at home with them to administer medication, for transportation, and for general monitoring.
