Aug. 19, 2011 - PRLog -- The 2011 recipient of the Richard Beckrow Memorial Scholarship is Deon Atkins, a 2011 honor graduate of Benton Harbor High School.  Atkins is a past participant of Lory’s Place, attending after the sudden death of his father in 2006 of a blood clot.  He is continuing his education at Grand Valley State University.

“Lory’s Place has helped me become more social with other people when it comes to talking about the passing away of my father,” states Atkins.  “The scholarship means very much to me.  This money will lighten the cost of my schooling when I start this fall.  Also, this scholarship means that someone else cares about my future and wants me to become successful.  Lastly, this scholarship motivates me to continue my education because Dr. Beckrow did and now he is very prosperous,” continues Atkins.

The Richard Beckrow Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a graduating high school senior who is pursuing a college education, is in financial need and has experienced the death of a parent.  The fund was established in 2005 by Dr. Jason and Kathryn Beckrow to assist local youth who have experienced hardship to pursue higher education.  Richard Beckrow is Jason’s father who, sadly, died at the age of 41 as the result of an automobile accident.

Lory’s Place, a Grief Healing Center of Hospice at Home, provides tools to help children and adults cope with death, begin the healing process and ultimately adjust to the new normal of life in the healthiest way possible. Since opening on November 15, 2004, thousands of children and adults, have taken the courageous step of accessing the bereavement resource services of Lory’s Place.   With professional staff and trained volunteers, Lory’s Place provides regularly scheduled age-appropriate support group sessions, resources, and education. There is no charge for the programs and services that Lory’s Place provides.
