Free Online Service Brings Anxious Parents Peace of Mind While Giving Their Teenagers Privacy

Empty Ne.st is a free website that lets parents know when their child last used a social networking site, but does not divulge any information beyond the time and date of the last login. By logging into their accounts at www.emptyne.st, parents can see the last time their child accessed Facebook, Twitter, or Foursquare. Empty Ne.st does not reveal the details of their online activities. Parents do not need “friend” or “follow” their students; their kids simply must agree to allow Empty Ne.st to let their parents know the last time they used their social network accounts. The service is free for both parents and their kids, but Empty Ne.st also offers an optional paid service that alerts parents via email, SMS, or phone if their child has not “checked in” to his or her account in a specified period of time. The fee for the service upgrade is $2.99 per month.

Using Empty Ne.st requires minimal technical skills. Parents or their teenagers simply visit www.emptyne.st and sign up with a name, email address, and password. Users only need to login to view the online activity. Both parents and their children must sign up and agree to the terms and conditions in order for the service to go into effect.
