Oakbio Inc. Captures Waste CO2 from Industry to Make Chemicals & Fuels

Oakbio Inc. makes chemicals and fuels using CO2 from waste gas otherwise released from industry into the atmosphere. Oakbio addresses the global need to reduce atmospheric CO2 accumulation by capturing CO2 and converting this CO2 into chemical value.

Aug. 16, 2011 - PRLog -- SUNNYVALE, Calif., Oakbio Inc. has developed a microbe-based technology to capture CO2 from waste industrial gas streams and convert this carbon into valuable chemicals and fuels. Oakbio has been developing this technology internally using synthetic gas mixtures and more recently, gas samples provided by industry.  Microbes have been identified and adapted to grow in darkness, under conditions where their only source of carbon is CO2 gas and their only source of energy is H2 gas. Since H2 can be generated on site using renewable energy, and CO2 removal from flue gas prevents atmospheric release of greenhouse gas, this process represents a novel route to sustainable chemicals and fuels manufacture. Additional information on Oakbio’s CO2 capture and conversion process can be seen at www.oakbio.com.

Generation of waste CO2 is an integral and inescapable part of many industrial processes. Current technologies to decrease greenhouse gas (GHG) release focus on CO2 capture and geo-sequestration. These technologies require access to geological formations suited to geo-sequestration, entail new risks and uncertainties, add significant costs and fail to create value from captured carbon.

“Oakbio’s microbe-based process captures CO2 from industrial exhaust gas in a clean process, converting it on-site into biomass and valuable chemicals,” explained Russell Howard, CEO of Oakbio. “This new process is called Carbon Capture and Conversion to emphasize achievement of both reduced GHG release and conversion of CO2 to new commercial value in chemicals and fuels”. Howard, who created and spun out industrial chemicals and bio-fuels company Codexis from Maxygen, both NASDAQ listed, is a pioneer in development of non-petroleum, non-foodstock derived chemicals and fuels using microbial technologies.

“The Oakbio process uses special microbes which naturally capture CO2 gas. We do not need any plant or biomass-derived feedstock. Chemicals manufacture can be independent of commodity sugars and the growing market challenges of feedstock use for human food and biofuels or chemicals ” said Brian Sefton, Oakbio’s CTO and President.
