DrakonStudio Inspired by Turnout as 500 People Choose to Donate at ‘Do it For Dona!’

Aug. 11, 2011 - PRLog -- MILLER PLACE, N.Y. - DrakonStudio wants to share the inspiration and strength that surrounds Dona Marzigliano Brannigan as she continues moving forward in her life after being diagnosed with leukemia on Mother's Day.

On July 31st from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., hundreds of people showed their support by visiting the Miller Place Firehouse to register as bone marrow donors or to simply share their stories and show their support to Dona and others going through the same struggles. There were many families and individuals at the event who were fighting through their own pain to offer their support.

"Everyone is like 'Try to be sad'. I just can't be sad. You know, why am I going to be sad? Why?" said Dona at the event. "I was working. I have my three kids. I have my Ebay business. I waitress--I'm always on the run...When did I have to get Leukemia?"

Some may believe that donating bone marrow is a difficult process and could be painful, but the truth is the process is simple and painless and DrakonStudio wants to share the details to help spread how important it is to register to be a bone marrow donor.

The steps to register are simple:

1.   Fill out the registration and declaration of consent form.
2.   Wait for the donor kit, apply two cotton swabs for 10 seconds—one on each side of the inside of both cheeks—and send back the kit.
3.   Wait for a call for the ability to save someone's life.

Even with a registry of millions of possible donors, only 4 out of 10 patients find a match and receive the transplant they need as only 2 percent of population is on the national registry list. Of registries such as the Be the Match foundation, which currently has more than 9 million donors registered, only one in every 540 will actually donate. This is mostly due to the difficulty of matching a donor to a patient. Even with family, one sibling may be a 25 percent match while having 10 siblings increases the chances of a match to 92 percent.
