“Even if you are good at the striking arts like boxing, Muay Thai, or Karate you could break your hand striking an opponent and that will not guarantee that the fight is over. Recent news stories like the Kelly Thomas story out of Fullerton, have shown that it can take many strikes to subdue someone. It also proves that other less than lethal weapons such as tasers can sometimes be unreliable,”
In Fullerton, six Police officers used strikes and a Taser to subdue a homeless man who was resisting arrest. The man later died from injuries sustained in the arrest.
Joel says, “ our Marital Arts System is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This martial art specializes in controlling an opponent without striking. A fight can then be finished with one of the many choke holds in the Jiu-Jitsu arsenal. We know the techniques work because we see them in action in Mixed Martial Arts events like the UFC and the real life testimonies from within our Jiu-Jitsu community.”
Due to the fact that opponents range in physical size, strength and ability, it is important to learn a self-defense system that uses leverage and body mechanics as its key to success rather than strength and force. More often then not, an aggressor will be bigger, heavier and stronger than the victim. Without these techniques, gaining control or submitting the aggressor will be difficult.
The Total Zen Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy is dedicated to teaching and preserving this Martial Art in its purest form to all that are willing to learn.
