CLOSING RECEPTION:  Friday, August 26, 6-9 pm
Exhibition Runs August 6 -27, 2011

Pottery Northwest – the Pacific Northwest’s premier ceramics studio and a community of artists at many levels – is pleased to present “a dark red,” a solo exhibition of work by Drew Nicklas.  The show will run from August 6 through August 27, 2011 in the Gallery of Pottery Northwest’s historic home at 226 First Avenue North (between Thomas and John), just one block south of the Key Arena at the Seattle Center.  A Closing Reception with the artist will be held on Friday, August 26, from 6-9 pm.  The public is cordially invited to attend.

Winner of the 2010 UN-WEDGED Director’s Award, Drew Nicklas is currently concluding his artist-in-residency at Pottery Northwest.  A resident artist at Pottery Northwest since 2009, Nicklas has developed quite a following within this vibrant clay community.  His fans are drawn not only to the simple honesty of his soda and wood-fired work but to the humor and easy-going nature of the artist. Nicklas received an MFA from Montana State University, after completing first a BA in Economics/International Political Economy at the University of Puget Sound and then an MA in International Political Economy at Colorado State University.

“a dark red” explores a new shade of soda firing. It matches an expressionist style of functional pottery with deep muted reds.  The result is strong, iron rich work that exudes a quiet variation in color through the spontaneity of the firing process.  The work is an expression of two years at Pottery Northwest.  It is manifest of the time spent in the studio, a response to the hours of looking through the studio’s permanent collection and the energy of the organization itself.  “I really wanted to make a show clearly derived from my time at Pottery Northwest.  I think this show is an expression of what it means to have an opportunity to work within such a wonderful organization and to become a Northwest Potter” said Nicklas.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm. For further information and high-resolution images, please contact Nana Kuo at nana@potterynorthwest.org.  Additional information about the artist and web-resolution images are also available at www.drewnicklas.com.
