Aug. 10, 2011 - PRLog -- Following the recent news released by the HSE that three UK companies and a sub-contractor have received fines totaling £25,323 under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 for asbestos exposure, Wayne Eaton from CQMS, a leading health and safety consultancy based in Lincolnshire, is keen to remind company owners that asbestos management should not be overlooked at any stage of a construction project.

Wayne carries out hundreds of site inspections each year and he sees firsthand the value of attention to detail when it comes to health and safety.

Wayne says,

“Asbestos was extensively used as a building material in the UK from the 1950s through to the mid-1980s. It was used for a variety of purposes and was ideal for fireproofing and insulation. Any building constructed before 2000 (houses, factories, offices, schools, hospitals etc.) can contain asbestos.

“Under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006, there is a responsibility to protect others who work in non-domestic premises from the ill-health that exposure to asbestos causes. Therefore, before anyone undertakes any construction work, there is a responsibility to establish whether asbestos may be present and as precaution, conduct an asbestos survey before work commences.”

According to 2009/2010 statistics from the HSE, asbestos-related diseases are responsible for around 4,000 deaths a year from occupational cancers and some of these could have been prevented by appropriate asbestos management.

Wayne continues,

“At CQMS we have many years’ experience of helping our clients with their health and safety needs, including preparation of Asbestos Management Plans and Asbestos Awareness training seminars, which comply with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006.”

Wayne finishes,

“As the legislation surrounding health and safety is constantly changing and being updated, some employers find it difficult to keep up to date with health and safety legislation. However, the costs involved in complying with the law pale into insignificance, when compared to the consequences of not protecting the lives of your employees or the public. Cutting corners to save costs is not an option as the fines imposed by the HSE this month prove.”

CQMS’ health and safety consultants are highly qualified and experienced in ensuring their clients comply with current health and safety legislation.
