Fresh Advice for Weary Alzheimer’s Caregivers
For Immediate Release
August 9, 2011 – OLATHE, KS – Kansas City area author Marie Marley, PhD, has just released her long-awaited memoir, Come Back Early Today: A Memoir of Love, Alzheimer’s, and Joy. This compelling love story presents novel information, advice and hope to dedicated - but often exhausted - caregivers moving along the path of an overwhelming journey.
Gregg Warshaw, MD, Past President of the American Geriatrics Society and Professor at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, strongly recommends the book to caregivers of dementia patients. “It will show them it’s possible to find new and creative ways to communicate and interact with their loved ones,” he says. “And it will let them know they are not alone.”
Marley’s memoir, available on Amazon.com, narrates her thirty-year relationship with the love of her life - Edward Theodoru, PhD - a delightfully colorful, yet wickedly eccentric Romanian gentleman. Theodoru came to the US in the 60s as a political refugee from Romania. This book focuses on his later years, when he had Alzheimer’s.
The two most difficult problems for caregivers are coming to terms with their loved one’s condition and finding new ways of relating to each other.
Other major issues typically faced by Alzheimer’s caregivers include:
1. A fierce denial that there even is a problem
2. Dealing with the loved one’s disturbing personality changes
3. Getting the loved one to stop driving
4. Managing assisted living and/or nursing home placement
5. Engaging hospice services
6. Making end-of-life care decisions
Given the aging of the baby boomers, it’s no surprise this devastating disease currently afflicts more than five million Americans. Even more striking, it’s estimated that ten million family members, friends and neighbors are providing care for people with Alzheimer’s. These caregivers have a critical need for guidance, and this inspiring book goes a long way toward filling that need. This is a must read book for all Alzheimer’s caregivers.
