Blood was collected at Lee Mental Health on July 27 and on August 2 at SWFAS. The results are in and SWFAS won the challenge – with both a greater percentage of employees donating blood and a greater number of pints donated, too! SWFAS had 29 employees (19 percent of total staff) participate, while Lee Mental Health had 22 employees (7 percent of total staff). Between the two organizations, 51 employees donated blood, which will save 150 lives. To up the ante and encourage more employees to give, the agency CEOs agreed that the CEO of the agency that lost the challenge would shave his mustache. Lee Mental Health President & CEO, David Winters, followed through on the friendly wager and did indeed shave his mustache! A mustache-less David Winters presented the “Blood Drive Challenge” trophy and offered his congratulations to SWFAS CEO Kevin Lewis. As this year’s winner, SWFAS plans to rotate the trophy among each of its five offices throughout the year. Both Lewis and Winters agreed that at the end of the day, it’s really about giving back to the community that gives so much everyday to support mental health and substance abuse services. “The plan is to make this blood drive challenge an annual event with the trophy moving from year to year, based on who wins the challenge,” said Todd Cordisco, Vice President of Community Relations at Lee Mental Health Center.
