By: Tiffany Bley Hammond, IN (August 2, 2011)- The Festival of the Lakes in July was the start of a green tradition to increase awarness in the City of Hammond. The Hammond Recycling Department went from 4 recycling containers last year at the Festival of the Lakes, to providing over 40 recepticles this year. “We were happy to expand the city's recycling efforts,” said Kathy Kazmierczak, Director of the Hammond Recycling Department. “The Festival was the perfect opportunity for us to make a difference and create the tradition of going green in Hammond.” Recycling was implemented in all areas of the Festival including the food, carnival, entertainment, beer tent, the entertainment's trailers, and even composted fruit peelings during the 5K run event. During the Festival of the Lakes golf outing, recycling bins were placed at each tee and local businesses donated coffee mugs so no styrofoam cups would be used at the event. “Our green efforts at Festival of the Lakes are another example of how our City is making a difference each and every day,” said City of Hammond Mayor Thomas M. McDermott, Jr. “Recycling is not an option if we are going to make Hammond and this planet a better place to live. I hope that our efforts will encourage others to recycle and be cognizant of our responsibility to safeguard the environment. “ The Hammond Park Department and the Wolf Lake pavilion will now continue the green tradition started by the Festival of the Lakes by having plenty of recycling for the remainder of the season. The compost bin, donated by Menards, that was utilized for the Festival's 5K run will now be at the Recycling Department for employees to utlilize. More information on composting is available at the Recycling Department for Hammond residents. For more information, visit Hammond's website at www.gohammond.com or call 853-6622. End
