Aug. 5, 2011 - PRLog -- The Trust for Architectural Easements is one of the largest preservation easement holding organizations in the nation. As a not-for-profit organization, it regularly holds educational events for the public. One such event was a walking tour of Baltimore’s Mount Vernon Cultural District.

The Mount Vernon Cultural District consists of venerable institutions, beautiful churches and the Mount Vernon Place National Register Historic District. On the walking tour, participants view and discuss the history and architecture of the St. Ignatius church built in 1856; the Robert Mills’ Washington Monument, a tall Doric column of white marble completed in 1829; the Walters Art Museum designed by Williams Adam Delano following the Renaissance Palazzo style. Also included on the tour is the Basilica of the Assumption: the oldest Catholic cathedral in North America, designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe in 1804. Latrobe also designed the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. The Basilica is considered to be one of Latrobe’s most brilliant works.
