Weight-Loss Surgery Gives Promising Hope For Reversed Infertility

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - A small new study from researchers at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics may provide new hope for obese women who are infertile due to Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Aug. 1, 2011 - PCOS is a hormonal imbalance affecting up to 10% of women in their child bearing years. The imbalance affects a woman’s menstrual cycle, fertility, hormone levels and physical appearance.  Women with PCOS produce high levels of insulin that, in turn, cause their bodies to generate excessive levels of male hormones and androgens. These excess male hormones interfere with the production of female hormones necessary for ovulation.  About one-third to one-half of women diagnosed with PCOS are overweight or obese having a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more according to the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

Researchers from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics are encouraged by their recent study.  Reviewing the records of 566 morbidly obese women with an average BMI of 52 who had gastric bypass surgery and lost substantial amounts of weight, they chose 20 of women from the ages of 22 to 42 to follow.  14 of these women were fertile yet had no desire for more children while the remaining six were diagnosed with infertility and hoped to become pregnant.  Within three years of surgery, all six previously infertile women successfully conceived.

While this research is considered preliminary until published in a medical journal, it indicates that women who lose weight are more likely to have restored ovulation, lower levels of male hormones/androgens and improved pregnancy rates.  Gastric bypass surgery may be a new surgical option to reverse infertility for women who suffer from PCOS.
