Aug. 1, 2011 - PRLog -- Remains of the ancient city Myra are in majority covered by alluvial silts. On the acropolis survived defensive walls and throne of stone from the Lycian period. At the foot of acropolis is located the biggest in Lycia Roman amphitheatre with 38 rows of seats and a decoration fraught with theatrical masks and mythological scenes. In the historic town and neighbourhood are remarkable rock-hewn tombs with front elevation imitating temple architecture. The most popular is the Lion's Tomb also called the Painted Tomb because of owning colorful interior painted in vivid tints of red, yellow and blue.

In antiquity a splendid temple of Artemis Eleuthera - the most magnificent building around the world with countless gardens, an alter, a statue of goddess and inner courtyard surrounded by a colonnade  was pulled down by order of St. Nicholas, bishop of Myra, fighting with pagan cults in Lycia. Also worth paying attention are walls of a church from IV age century with grave crypts and damaged sarcophagus containing remains of Saint’s body (later desecrated and stolen by raiders from Bari) discovered under the church of St. Nicholas Church from XIX age century full of vibrant frescoes illustrating the life and miracles of the Saint.

Very attractive for tourists looking for spectacular views may be partially excavated Roman baths and semi-circular theater rebuilt after an earthquake in 141. The main salvaged attraction is a granary built during the Hadrian reign period containing seven rooms decorated with portraits of himself and his wife. Myra, because of terrible plague, earthquakes, fights against a background of religious issues and flooding was completely abandoned by the 11th century.
