CSP pensions off outdated applications in mainframe environments

Chronos serves Oracle, MS-SQL, Informix and DB2 as a database-independent standard solution

Aug. 1, 2011 - PRLog -- Großköllnbach, 1st August 2011. Utilising Chronos means database archiving is also an option for mainframe databases. CSP GmbH & Co. KG based in Großköllnbach, Germany, offers the opportunity to save costs through decommissioning, an opportunity especially suited to outdated legacy applications.
CSP has shown in customer projects that standard processes for archiving databases do not have to call it a day when it comes to mainframe databases. Chronos swaps inactive data from DB2 and Informix databases and in so doing frees up expensive resources. According to surveys carried out by Forrester Research a large part of the information stored in databases is scarcely accessed, but causes enormous costs without the benefit of real added value.
The question faced when migrating from mainframe architectures to Windows or Unix/Linux architectures is how to deal with the data from legacy applications. Migration often entails a long, drawn-out project in which compromises need to be made. By providing simple mechanisms to access retained data Chronos ensures that only data necessary to fulfil operative requirements need migrate. This approach significantly lowers costs for mainframe solutions and at the same time reduces dependence on expensive mainframe systems.
"To date many considered the risk of switching off legacy applications on mainframes to be too great" explains Stefan Brandl, Product Manager Database Archiving at CSP. "We have provided conclusive evidence in customer projects that Chronos data and business logic represents a long-term solution". Many standard tools are not available for DB2 and Informix databases on mainframes. With Chronos, CSP offers this target group the same performance as the providers of other databases. Even with heterogeneous database landscapes companies are able to reap huge benefits by deploying Chronos as a central archiving component. As a database-independent standard solution Chronos supports numerous database producers and versions. As well as established databases such as Oracle and MS SQL Server supporting online archiving and application retirement Z/OS and Windows/Linux based Informix and DB2 are also successfully archived.
"The costs for companies are reduced considerably when one system can be used for different databases" explains Stefan Brandl, Product Manager Database Archiving at CSP. "One system means at one and the same time less training costs for users and a reduction in commensurate maintenance costs.
