Nissan Altima is 4-door sedan or 2-door coupe.

2012 Nissan Altima

The 2012 Nissan Altima could gain some color choices and perhaps one or two packages that combine various features in new ways.

Otherwise ? barring a special, low-volume performance version with its own styling details -the 2012 Altima should be a visual rerun of the 2011 Altima.

That means a four-door sedan marked by arched forms free from extraneous decoration and a lower-slung two-door coupe built on a shortened version of the sedan's chassis.

The Nissan Altima sedan traces its roots to model-year 2007, the coupe to model-year 2008. Both got a facelift for model-year 2010, but the confident lines and considered details that once helped Altima stand out in the crowded midsize segment no longer look so fresh. More contemporary new rivals also have overtaken Altima for roominess, refinement, and cabin-materials quality.

The Nissan 2012 Altima will again lend much of its engineering to the upscale Nissan Maxima, including the basics of its front-wheel-drive platform and available V-6 powertrain.

Front-wheel drive puts the weight of the engine over the wheels that propel the car, to the benefit of snowy-surface traction. But in powerful cars such as a V-6 Altima, front-wheel drive can diminish steering precision during fast takeoffs.

Driving enthusiasts tend to prefer the more equitable balance of weight and traction afforded by rear-wheel drive, which Nissan reserves for cars from its premium Infiniti division. Expect the 2012 Altima to return sedan and coupe models badged 2.5 S and 3.5 SR, as well as an entry-level sedan tagged simply 2.5.

A 2012 potential high-performance model ? sedan, coupe, or both ? could revive the SE-R moniker used by previous speedy-edition Altimas.
Power: A powertrain lineup consisting of two gas engines and a gas-electric hybrid won't be disrupted for the 2012 Nissan Altima.

A majority of Nissan Altima buyers choose the four-cylinder engine, and the 2012 Altima 2.5 and 2.5 S models will return with a 2.5-liter that's likely to retain its 175-horsepower rating. The 2012 Altima 3.5 SR sedan and coupe will again use a 3.5-liter V-6 that should repeat at 270 horsepower.

The 3.5 SR models also feature a sport-tuned suspension and 17-inch alloy wheels versus other model's standard 16s. Should Nissan decide to resurrect an Altima SE-R or the like, it could get something similar to the 290-horsepower version of the 3.5-liter V-6 used in the Maxima, plus upgraded suspension and tires and perhaps special sport seats and 18-inch wheels.

Nissan could bolster an Altima performance-sedan's credentials by offering it with a manual transmission.

Otherwise, expect all 2012 Altima sedans to again be equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) as a stand-in for a conventional automatic transmission. Designed to more efficiently balance engine power and fuel consumption, CVTs use an internal belt-pulley system instead of static gear ratios.

The 2012 Nissan Altima coupes should again be available with the CVT or a six-speed manual transmission.

The 2012 Nissan Altima Hybrid will likely return and again be sold only in emissions-
restricted Northeastern and West Coast states. The Altima Hybrid is a sedan that uses a four-cylinder gasoline engine, an electric motor powered by an on-board battery pack, and a CVT. The system self-charges, is rated at 198 total horsepower, and can propel the car on electricity alone at low speeds.

Features Nissan Altima: Nissan's kept Altima's features list nicely up to date, though it hasn't been so forward thinking about the range of Altima models that can be equipped with particular features. We're referring primarily to Bluetooth hands-free cell-phone connectivity, which today qualifies as a safety feature, as well as related conveniences like USB iPod interface and steering-wheel buttons to control both.

Such features are standard on all versions of some newer midsize cars, notably the Hyundai Sonata. And they're standard or widely available on a growing number of less-expensive compact models.

Nissan isn't alone in reserving Bluetooth, USB linking or features like navigation systems for higher-priced trim levels or confining them to pricey options packages ? Honda and Toyota are guilty, too.

It will likely require the large number of redesigns that'll reshape the midsize class for model-year 2013 to change things. Meanwhile, the best way to equip a 2012 Altima with the latest in infotainment probably will be to order one of the premium or navigation packages. Premium packages have been running roughly $1,800-$2,400, depending on model.

The navigation-system package has been priced around $1,800. To Nissan's credit, Altima's premium-audio options include a rearview camera that displays on a 4.3-inch color dashboard screen.

And the navigation system is a hard-drive setup with a 6.5-inch color display and map data that includes speed-limit advisories, Zagat restaurant guide, XM NavTraffic and NavWeather, and 9.3GB of music storage.

These packages, though, have not been available on the base 2.5 model.

Similarly, such features as leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, power moonroof, remote keyless entry with pushbutton ignition, and xenon headlamps have been standard or optional on all but the base 2.5 sedan.

Expect every 2012 Altima to come standard with air conditioning, power windows, locks, and mirrors, cruise control, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, manual driver's seat height adjuster, and an outside-temperature indicator.

And all but the Hybrid should again have split/folding rear seatbacks to enhance cargo-carrying versatility.
