July 28, 2011 - PRLog -- It was ready, steady cook at the award-winning Gibraltar Care Village at the weekend as two members of staff took part in a high energy cook off.

The ‘cook off’ saw more than 30 people attend where they were able to vote for their favourite menu by holding up either a red or a green sign.

The popular event kicked off at the £10 million Care Village development with two members of staff, Chef Jibu Jose and Village service manager Grant Bowes, battling it out to win the competition.

Each contestant was given a bag filled with different ingredients from which they needed to create either a two-course meal or a three-course meal in 30 minutes.

In Jibu’s bag was a pork loin, sweet potatoes, broccoli and mango and in Grant’s there was a pack of chicken fillets, celeriac, pineapple, biscuits, mascarpone, evaporated milk and pak choi.

With only 30 minutes to come up with their winning dishes the contestants started the competition with commentary from Village manager Stephane Beaumont to keep the crowd entertained.

Jibu’s menu consisted of Pork Loin stuffed with spring onion and mustard and mango sauces. This was served with sweet potato mash and a broccoli garnish.

For his desert he made the Italian classic Tiramisu which was nicknamed Jibbumassu.

Grant decided to create a pak choi soup, and a choice of two different main dishes. The first was pan fried chicken fillet with a red wine and cream sauce, celeriac and mustard mash and sautéed pak choi.

The second was Pollo Milanese. This consisted of panned chicken fillet with freshly made tagliatelle tossed in olive oil, basil and lemon juice and zest.

The audience were able to have a taste of the different dishes before choosing the winner by holding up their signs.

Grant had the most votes and won the competition with his delicious menu.

Grant said: “I am over the moon to have won this competition although a bit shocked.

“I enjoy cooking outside of work but have never been given ingredients and had to prepare something in a set time so that was quite difficult.

“At Gibraltar Care Village we aim to provide our residents with a five star menu seven days a week and ensure all their needs are catered for and this is reflected in this competition.

“I am glad people enjoyed the competition and I hope we can hold something like this again soon.”

Care Village Manager, Stephane Beaumont told us: “With every event we hold we try to make it as fun and successful as possible.

“This event was great and everyone had a brilliant time especially tasting all the lovely food that was made by our two creative and hard-working members of staff.”
