July 28, 2011 - PRLog -- It would appear that the majority of Brits are against Wi-Fi becoming available in their local supermarket, as 56% have admitted that they aren’t looking forward to the potential introduction of Wi-Fi across all of Tesco’s UK stores.

Following the news that Tesco is planning to trial Wi-Fi in four of their UK stores, with a view to it becoming available nationwide, www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk polled 986 people to find out what they thought about being able to browse online whilst doing their shopping; using in-store Wi-Fi.

Respondents were initially asked if they thought that having Wi-Fi available in supermarkets was a good idea, to which the majority, 56% said ‘no’. In contrast, 41% of respondents were 'in favour' of the idea, whilst the remaining 3% were 'unsure.'

When asked to stipulate why they thought it was a bad idea, just over a third, 38%, believed it would 'distract other shoppers,' whilst 51% simply that that it would be ‘annoying’.

In contrast, of the 41% of respondents who thought that it was a good idea; the majority, 36%, explained that they thought it would be 'useful' to be able to browse the internet in order to compare grocery prices whilst you shop. Furthermore, 23% said that it would be useful as it would 'eliminate the need for shop assistants.'

68% of those polled said that they thought the majority of people would 'abuse the Wi-Fi privilege' by using the service to download large files or browse the internet at length. Just 24% of those polled said that they wouldn’t use the Wi-Fi network to access social networking accounts.

Mark Pearson, chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, had the following to say about the results:

“It’s interesting to find out how many people are against the introduction of Wi-Fi in Tesco stores. The introduction has been hailed as an aid to the shopping experience, but if people use the Wi-Fi for the likes of social networking or downloads whilst they shop, it could be a large distraction."

He continued:

“However, I’m sure measures will have been put in place to prevent people from abusing the in-store Wi-Fi. Using it to check prices whilst you shop really could be a great way of making sure that you're getting the best deal, and could potentially save you money."
