Euronext was formed in September 2000 through a merger of the Amsterdam Stock Exchange, Brussels Stock Exchange and Paris Bourse to take advantage of the harmonization of EU financial markets. Speaking at its launch, Jean-François Théodore, the former head of the Paris Bourse and the first chief executive of the new group, said: "Euronext is not a vision but a reality. In fact, in February this year, NYSE Euronext agrees to a $10.2bn merger with Deutsche Börse; this megamerger, which is subject to the approval of regulators and shareholders, is set to create one of the world's largest exchange groups.
