The richness of the surfaces, the bold use of color, and the dramatic composition tell the story of Koury's Koi series. These pastel mixed media drawings are a statement of whimsy and natural observation. This is a series that is inspired by the joyous movement and playful antics of these aquatic creatures that Aleah observed on his own land.
When Julie Ann spoke to Aleah, he said "I have a Koi pond on my property, and would observe the koi fish. From my observations I started painting them, although I didn't realize they would become so popular and become a niche in the marketplace."
As a feng shui designer, Julie Ann believes this piece could enhance the wealth of the occupants in a space because it is a water feature, affirming prosperity when placed in the wealth area of the *bagua of a home or office. The front entry is another area that wealth and prosperity could be elevated by this piece.

About Aleah Koury:
I approach my work in a non-traditional way. My academic background is in both two and three dimensions and I am currently walking the fine line that sometimes conjoins them. Ceramics started it. Transforming earth, water, fire and air into something expressive struck me as magical. And, over the years that process has had it’s way with me.
I love honesty in materials and use many mediums in their purest form. This is certainly true in my recent work. Rust is rust. Fire is used as a mark making tool and transformer. Copper, steel and bronze powders are left to present as themselves. These are my usual vehicles. Making art is key for me. It is my way of communicating personal vision using developed visual language.
Creating fills me with a sense of accomplishment and has proven valid for translating inner vision into outer reality. I paint from the inside out. It was 1979 that I decided to call myself an artist. I took an image from a dream that inspired my first large, controlled environmental sculpture utilizing the four basic earth elements.
I recently moved to a small ranch on the Central Coast of California. Inspired by a sense of continuity in my surroundings and the inter-connected web between all things natural, I began working on two new series. “Before Genesis” and “Oh Happy Days”. Here I have allowed some imagery to take center stage but know it is the sum of the parts that becomes the work. It is all inter dependent.
