Brazil Telecommunications Report Q3 2011: New research report available at Fast Market Research

New Fixed Networks research report from Business Monitor International is now available from Fast Market Research

July 27, 2011 - PRLog -- Brazil reports another quarter of astounding growth, showing that the country shows no signs of slowdown. Due to the country's large population, there is still great potential for strong growth to continue in the coming years. This will be driven by existing mobile network operators (MNOs) such as Vivo, Oi, Claro and TIM as well as mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) that operate over their networks. After regulation was passed in January 2011, we have seen the entrance of one MVNO so far - Porto Seguro. We expect more before the end of 2011. Additionally, all operators have been reporting high volumes of growth in net mobile additions, and much of this organic growth is coming from low-income Brazilians, many of whom remain without a mobile.

These developments continue have a negative effect on ARPUs in the market. BMI sees some scope for growth as mobile broadband rises and postpaid subscribers spend more on mobile data services, but this will be countered by low-priced services aimed at capturing the remaining new customers in the market. In the long term, BMI continues to forecast ARPU decline, albeit at a slower rate than previously seen.

Broadband subscriptions in Brazil grew 51.5% y-o-y to reach a total of 38.5mn fixed and mobile connections at end-March 2011, according to TeleBrasil. Broadband is a key area of focus for the Brazilian Government, with the government's Plano Nacional de Banda Larga (PNBL - National Broadband Plan) taking shape. While BMI welcomes the boost to the local economy this will provide, we remain slightly concerned that the costs of the network, which aims to offer broadband connections for BRL39.90, may be creeping higher, making low-cost services more difficult to offer. Increasing broadband access can also benefit local economies and businesses as well as provide opportunities for new projects in areas such as eeducation and telehealth to reach more remote parts of the country, therefore BMI welcomes the continued efforts of the Brazilian government to provide universal broadband.

Brazilian international cooperation also increased this quarter. The presidents of Brazil and Uruguay collaborated in Q211 as part of a drive to improve bilateral relations and placed cooperation in the ICT sector high on their priorities. Dilma Rousseff and Jose Mujica met at the Technical Laboratory of Uruguay, the centre of new technology development in the country, which BMI believes highlights the growing importance of the sector. Brazil and Uruguay have two of the most advanced ICT sectors in the region and their complementary strengths mean huge potential benefits exist from trade and cooperation.
