July 25, 2011 - PRLog -- Is there anyone in Hallandale Beach who doesn’t know George Posnansky? Many people know George for his volunteer work with the Park and Recreation Advisory Board,
Neighborhood Crime Watch and the Police Athletic League. What they may not know is that George is a war veteran and a poet as well.

George’s vision problems – and his link to South Florida – go all the way back to World War II. A New York boy at the time, he joined the military and remembers being sent to
Florida and marching along Collins Avenue in Miami Beach. The troops had to stop for a red light because they were not allowed to interfere with traffic, he recalls. “It was very
funny,” he said, adding, “Sometimes we would grab a soda or sandwich and then continue our marching and training.”

As a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during the Great War, George’s mission was Air Sea rescue in the Atlantic Ocean, and he flew on a B-17 Flying Fortress that dropped life
rafts and emergency supplies to airmen whose planes had been downed. PT boats would then be given the coordinates, and they would pick up the troops in the water.
Back then, George had terrible vision due to myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism and had to wear thick glasses. He was almost blind without his glasses, so he was
always afraid he would lose them, especially when he was up in the air in a plane.
Apparently, George got sand in his military boots because after the war he moved to South Florida from New York and became a licensed massage therapist and state inspector for the massage industry. “Massage was popular in the 60s and 70s, and every hotel on the beach had a massage service.”

Throughout the years, George remained keenly aware of how important his eyes were to his work and his life, and he wanted to rid himself of the drawer full of reading glasses in
his desk, but he never had the opportunity. Recently, George noticed his vision was deteriorating, so he visited the Braverman Eye Center (http://www.bravermaneyecenter.com/) in Hallandale Beach. Dr.
Stanley Braverman, a board-certified ophthalmologist, told George that he had developed cataracts in both eyes, and he would require surgery to correct his vision. George was a little surprised that Dr. Braverman would recommend surgery for
someone his age – 93 years old -- but Dr. Braverman told him that he had successfully performed the same surgery on his own mother when she was 89.
“I was not really nervous going through the cataract operation and, in fact, looked forward to the procedure,”

George said.
“I had the top-of-the-line Tecnis Multi-Focal Lens put in both my eyes, first one eye, then a month later the other eye,”
George explained. The Tecnis lens serves several purposes and eliminates the need for reading glasses and distance glasses over 90% of the time.

George was completely satisfied with Dr. Braverman’s surgery (http://www.bravermaneyecenter.com/) and actually was surprised with how good his new vision is. “Since the surgery, I have noticed that whenever I look around outdoors, all the colors have become more intense,” he said. “I would recommend Dr. Stanley Braverman for any eye condition, especially cataracts,” George said. “The staff was very nice and attentive and followed up on all postsurgery
procedures. I also noticed that all of the doctor’s patients are treated in the same caring way.”

George was so happy with his surgery that he was inspired to write a poem!

Who Turned My Lights On
By George Posnansky
I can see clearly now, the rain did fall.
I can see clouds and the sun shining above.
I can see clearly now. Who turned my lights on?

Dr. Braverman, Dr. Braverman that’s who!
I look all around, I see nothing but blue skies.
I look all around, there’s plenty to see.
That’s why I know “Who turned my lights On”
Dr. Braverman, Dr. Braverman that’s who!

What Are Cataracts
A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual
function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion.
Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect
people of all ages.

Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare
disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient.

Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be
recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy.

Cataract Surgery (What to expect)
Cataract surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. An artificial lens is then placed inside the eye where the cloudy lens used to be.

Cataract surgery continues to improve. Recent developments include no-stitch surgery, topical anesthesia, surgical correction of astigmatism, and new upgraded lens designs. Eye drops are given to the patient to aid in the healing of the eye, which takes a few months, but the patient is able to return to normal activity almost immediately after
surgery and usually sees well within just days. If the eye is otherwise healthy, cataract surgery is successful in more than 98% of patients and they enjoy improved vision after the procedure.
