By: jumpingspidermedia Time-starved and cost-conscious shoppers are beginning to buy bulk food and household groceries in ever-increasing numbers. As the Daily Mail article from 23rd June 2011, puts it, “Food prices in Britain are increasing three times faster than the rest of Europe — but wages are not keeping pace. So how can cash-strapped families keep up? Well, a new wave of American-style bulk-buy websites are promising to cut down bills by delivering in larger quantities and charging wholesale prices....You can use these companies to stock up on essentials — things like toilet roll, cans, cereals, sugar, olive oil and baked beans — and make savings by buying multiple items.” The daily newspaper decided to test which one of these bulk-delivery wholesale food and grocery companies provided the best service and offered the greatest savings. They asked mother-of-three Amanda Cable, who normally spends £130 a week at her local supermarket, to test Shorters Club, Amazon and Ethical Superstore. Her findings when it came to Shorters Club were impressive: “Just 48 hours after my online order, a van arrives at 7pm and delivers two giant cardboard boxes filled with groceries. My frozen salmon fillets (£17.84 for 1kg; the equivalent from Waitrose costs £26.36) and milk are in a coolbox. I’ve spent £189.28 on my order but I’ve saved an incredible 28 pc — or £53.53 — by buying just ten items in bulk. My biggest savings are on some of the things I buy most regularly. I use a pack and a half of rice a week, and our favourite is Tilda Basmati — I save £6.68 by buying a pack of eight from Shorters Club — which would save me £66.80 a year on rice alone. I buy 5kg of potatoes a week, and the delicious fresh potatoes from Shorters Club would save me £94.12 a year — it charges just £2.09 per kg, while Sainsbury’s Maris Pipers cost £3.90. In total, by ordering just ten of my regular buys from Shorters Club I will save a massive £523.99 per year.” In summary she declares: “Shortersclub.com won overall with a swift service, the widest range of groceries and huge annual savings of £523.99 just on the ten items I chose.
