Ethiopia Awards Ogaden Gas Fields to Chinese Company

The leading stories of the week were in relation to the Ministry of Mines awarding the oil and gas exploration projects in Calub and Hilala and Ogaden Basin to China’s PetroTrans Company, following the withdrawal of Petronas. PetroTrans will pay $130 million as upfront payment and invest about $4 billion on the gas development project.

Also in the news was the help extended by Canadians for the starving millions in Ethiopia. Canadian agencies have come forward to donate more than $11 million for relief projects in the famine-hit Ethiopia, where the situation is said to be critical. More than half a million people are starving in Tigre and Walli, which have been completely ruined, with drought, famine, starvation, measles outbreak, confounding problems for the government.

Another important piece of Ethiopian news during the week was about the steeply rising orphan crisis in Ethiopia. An NGO, KIDMIA foundation, strives to create intensive awareness about the need for local adoptions in the country, especially as the number of orphans scaling to about 5.5 million in the country alone. KIDMIA held a workshop for religious leaders in the Ethiopian capital to raise its concerns about the rising Orphan Crisis in the country and seek an appropriate response on the issue.
