Peddle For A Better Tomorrow

The British High Commission, with the support of JCB India, today organised a sponsored cycle ride to raise funds for Cansupport and NICCI Cancer Care.

July 24, 2011 - PRLog -- Leading the cyclists were Lady Arabella Stagg, wife of His Excellency Sir Richard Stagg, British High Commissioner to India, and Ms Jane Sanders, Deputy Head Trade & Investment Northern Region, UK Trade and Investment.

Lady Stagg said:
“Jane and I have been discussing a charity bicycle ride in India for the last four years and thanks to the generous sponsorship of JCB it is actually happening…and for two such wonderful causes, Cansupport and NICCI. We are hoping that this will be the first of an annual ‘Charity Bike Ride’ in Delhi.”

Mr. Vipin Sondhi, MD & CEO, JCB India Ltd. said:
“At JCB India, CSR (corporate social responsibility) is a way of giving back to the society. This cycle rally is a great way of supporting the cause which will ultimately benefit cancer victims. We are grateful to Lady Stagg who initiated such an event that gave JCB an opportunity to get associated with this noble cause. ”

Cansupport cares for cancer patients in their own homes and also runs day care centres for children suffering from cancer. NICCI (New India Cancer Charity Initiative) Cancer Care, focuses on breast cancer screening in rural Indian villages and care thereafter.

The cycle ride was flagged off by Mr Julian Evans, Deputy High Commissoner, at 9:00 am from the British High Commission, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. Present at the occasion were members of the British High Commission, representatives from JCB India, Cansupport and NICCI Cancer Care.

The cyclists were followed by JCB 3DX machines to cheer and support them.

The cyclists finished, 45 kms later, at BAAS Village School, Tikli village, off the Sohna Road. The school was started by Martin Howard of Tikli Bottom Guest House 10 years ago to provide education for every child in three of the local villages.  The children were very excited to see the huge JCB machine and to receive gifts from JCB.

Harmala Gupta, President Cansupport, said:
“Cansupport is an organisation that lends a helping hand to those facing advanced cancer in the belief that there is no end to what skilled and compassionate care can accomplish. It is about helping people stay on the bike especially when the going gets tough so that they can finish their journey with hope and dignity.”

Dr Bhawna Sirohi, founder of NICCI, said:
“NICCI aims to screen for early cancer with cost-effective methods in villages to detect cancer early and save lives. Work has already begun in Daurala, Meerut district, and we hope to expand to more villages in the future. Let’s bike to a cancer free healthy India!”

JCB was the principal sponsor of the cycle ride. Support was also received from other organisations, including VFS Global Ltd, and through individual donations. One out of every two construction vehicles sold in India is a JCB. Their facility in Ballabgarh is the largest backhoe loader manufacturing facility in the world. Through the Lady Bamford Charitable Trust, JCB supports young and underprivileged people in India, focusing on the schools and villages near to JCB India’s factories. It adopted the Jharsaintly government high school in Ballabgarh, improving the facilities, providing funding for teachers and a scholarship scheme for the brightest children. The Trust also adopted two villages and their government schools close to JCB’s second factory in Pune.

The BAAS Educational Trust School was started 10 years ago by Martin Howard of Tikli Bottom Guest House to provide education for every child in the local villages.  The school has grown from a handful of children to now 330 in eight classes and will grow to 550 in 13 classes. Further information about the school is available at http://betsinfo.org/
