Vaccine Reduces Incidence Of Shingles Symptoms

July 23, 2011 - PRLog -- In a large clinical trial aimed at expanding the use of the vaccine from Merck & Co shingles, Zostavax reduced the incidence of shingles by 70% compared to placebo in adults aged 50 years, the company said.

The study of 22,439 control subjects, adults 50 to 59 at least one year after receiving the vaccine or a placebo with 30 cases of herpes zoster that occurred in the Zostavax group compared with 99 cases in the placebo group. This translates into a reduction in the incidence of shingles by 69.8% for Zostavax compared to placebo.

Based on the robust results, Merck said it has asked the Food and Drug Administration U.S. for approval of Zostavax to prevent shingles in people 50 to 59. Merck said it is awaiting a decision from FDA approval for the population in the first half of 2011.

The vaccine is approved to prevent herpes zoster, only people over 60 years. In this population the vaccine has been shown to decrease the incidence of shingles by 51%.
There was a greater incidence of overall adverse events in the vaccine group in the study - 72.8% versus 41.5% - mainly due to reactions at the injection site of Zostavax.
