Wine making on Kefalonia has featured heavily for thousands of years in the island’s history. August is when the grapes are harvested and, also, when the wine associated celebrations take place on the island.
The Robolo wine variety is known all over Kefalonia and further afield. The Robola (Rombola) wine making community itself is based in the island’s Omala region at an altitude of 700 metres. According to the Robola Wine Cooperative only seven specific areas can make the wine and, therefore, its quality is purely maintained. The most famous Robola wine is the white wine, with discrete essenece of butter, vanilla and white rose.
This year’s Rombola Wine festival will be held, as always, in the mid of August in the village of Fragata, where the majority of the village’s inhabitants take part in the local wine making industry. The festival (which began in 1978) grows every year and gives its hundreds of participants the opportunity to enjoy music, dancing, food and of course this mouth-watering wine.
