Says author William Schwenn:
“What began as an ordinary ‘let’s get a dog’ experience turned into a life-with-dogs lifestyle unlike any I have ever heard of or encountered ... and it didn’t happen overnight. It evolved imperceptibly as days turned into months, then into years, so that ultimately my wife and I discovered that we had been living in intimate partnership with the ‘other members’ of our ‘family,’ most members of which were dogs. We never treated or thought of the dogs as ‘people’ or even ‘versions of people.’
“My wife and I altered our behavior and thought patterns in subtle ways over time, to the degree that we interacted with our dogs in ways that mutually fostered our individual and collective happiness. Neither pets nor children, our dogs quite candidly became our partners, and in that increasingly close-knit relationship, each of us continually learned from the others’ life joys, lessons and secrets we would not have experienced any other way.
“As my wife and I lived through our middle-age years with the Meadowbrook dogs, we unwittingly became the beneficiaries of learning life philosophies not likely noticed by many people, which not only helped us to survive the sometimes harsh environment of country living, but also strengthened our ability to face what is ultimately the toughest challenge to anyone: mortality, and the mystery of what may lie thereafter.”
Dogs of Meadowbrook is unlike any other “dog book,” as the adventures, drama, tragedy, fun and abundant humor that comprise the story either directly emanate from – or are inspired by – the dogs themselves. It immerses the reader in a vivid world of action and emotions of extraordinary personalities and working/living relationships between the main characters (furry and human), and is set against a backdrop of the dramatic essence and beauty of nature. At its startling conclusion, the book prompts readers to take a more imaginative look at their own lives, find ways to put more joy into life, and face their own futures with considerably more enthusiasm and hope. This is the greatest gift of all from the dogs of Meadowbrook.
