“The Big I” Wins FTBA Best in Construction Award

GAI Consultants Honored for Complex Florida Interchange Project

Aug. 9, 2011 - PRLog -- Jacksonville, FL – On August 5, 2011, GAI Consultants and fellow team members received state-level recognition for the Florida Department of Transportation-District 2 I-10/I-95 Interchange project, winning the Florida Transportation Builders Association (FTBA) Best in Construction – Interchange Award.

The FDOT I-10/I-95 Interchange, known as “The Big I,” required 17 bridges, 21 ramps, and 25 lane miles to be built around moving traffic, through one of the busiest interchanges in Florida. The $157 million reconstruction project transformed Jacksonville's downtown transportation system, providing congestion relief and additional road capacity for approximately 172,000 vehicles daily.

The award-winning construction team includes prime consultant GAI Consultants (CEI), Archer Western Contractors (contractor), and URS Corporation (engineer of record).

“GAI is proud to be part of this collaboration with FDOT and Archer Western,” offers Greg Nettuno, P.E., Vice President/GAI-Jacksonville Managing Officer. “The Big I demonstrates that when the project team works together to solve major challenges associated with constructing complex transportation projects,  the results will have a direct benefit to the taxpayer and the traveling public.”

Construction on the Big I commenced in February 2005, and was completed six months ahead of schedule in October 2010.

Currently, the design-build team of GAI Consultants and Archer Western is working on the construction of State Road 9B. The project began in Summer 2010 and is slated for completion in Fall 2012.
